Martha Hughes is an artist whose creative spirit is shaped by the vast landscapes of the Texas Panhandle and Northern New Mexico mountains. Her artistic journey began early; she painted and exhibited as a teen in her hometown of Canyon, Texas, before moving to Marfa, TX, where she resided for much of her life. She now lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, drawing continuous inspiration from her surroundings  She now lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico drawing continuous inspiration from her surroundings. Her diverse work, across various series, consistently reflects a love of color, obsessive and repetitive processes, and an intention for her art to be personal yet relatable, aiming to evoke moods from joy to uneasiness. Her current abstract paintings are immersive experiences, inviting viewers into rich tapestries of paint, color, and thousands of meticulously applied small brushstrokes, demonstrating her precise method and ability to build complex visual narratives through subtle repetition, creating visually dynamic and deeply contemplative surfaces. Her "Scenes" series explores visual psychodramas, studying the emotive effects of color and ambiguous spaces, while her "Garden" series portrays gardens as profound places of refuge and solace. Hughes holds a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin, with additional post-graduate studies. Her work is in numerous corporate and private collections, including the former Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe. She is represented by Rule Gallery (Marfa and Denver) and G2 Gallery (Santa Fe).

The artist biographies for Witness Nothing were collaboratively written by curatorial interns Julyet Carillo and Elisa Leyva, with the oversight of Henry Schulte Assistant Curator of Practice. The content was compiled from a variety of sources, including personal websites, institutional biographies, critical essays, artist interviews, and exhibition texts. A comprehensive bibliography of all sources used is provided below. It is important to note that Gemini, a Google AI, was utilized in the editing process to condense and refine the initial drafts into more concise paragraphs, using the prompt: "Use the following information to shorten each artist bio to one paragraph.”
